What Exactly is a MODISTE?

Jan 03, 21

The word modiste has always been a noun, and while our webshop and showroom has recently made the word 'modiste' a store, it is typically used to refer to a person. It's estimated that the origin of the word dates back to the early 19th century, anywhere from 1803 to the 1830s, depending on the source, and arose out of the growing need for couture, or custom, women's clothing.

The word is French, and is derived from the word mode, which means style. Like The Queen's Gambit led to an increased interest in chess, there is an uptick in searches for the term 'modiste' due to Netflix's newest endeavor, Bridgerton. The show is set in Regency-era England, when the need for a true modiste was as relevant as ever, and many of the debutantes find themselves needing new, custom frocks regularly in the hopes of winning over a prince, duke, lord, or something of the sort.

While we may not be making custom gowns, you can certainly shop with our MODISTE for any of your wardrobe needs, from silk dresses to cashmere sweats. We've even had a few of the stars from the show shop with us. If you'd like to coordinate with Phoebe Dynevor (aka, Miss Bridgerton), make sure you snag our Cotton Wrap Top, and if you'd like to match Ruby Barker (aka Miss Marina Thompson) snap up our Hand-Embroidered Silk Dress. Use code 'BRIDGERTON' for 10% off your purchase!
